I felt compelled to fill in the missing details about Rina’s actual whereabouts the day before so Kimmy had an idea of what theories were rolling around in my head.

Kimmy was stunned to say the least. “So wait, girlfriend was really having drinks with this Brandi woman? That same chick we had to boot out of your restaurant?”

“The very same.”

Her shoulders sagged. “Man, that does not look good at all. Especially because she lied about it. Like, why lie unless you have something to hide?” She took a sip of her sake. “None of this makes sense.”

“I know. I want to believe she had nothing to do with this. That what we’re thinking is all wrong and we’re going to laugh about it one day. But the more time goes on, the more I question everything.”

“We need to get moving on these high-ticket items.” Kimmy wiggled in her seat. “I’m ready for whatever we have to do. And you’ll be happy to know that I talked with Peter about Gavin’s band during lunch.”

“Oh yeah? How’d that go?”

“Better than I expected. At first, I thought he was kind of suspicious. Like why am I even asking about this dude? But then I added that I thought one of the band members was a friend of Peter’s and wondered if he was devastated by what happened.”

“And he bought it?”

“Girl, I can sell ketchup popsicles to an Eskimo.”

I held in an eye roll.

“He told me I was confusing Dan with Joey. So then I was like, oh the guy we saw at the Beachland Ballroom? And he was like, nah, those guys like to hang out at the Grog Shop.”

I had to admit that I was impressed with her tactics and nodded with approval. “Now we have some place to scope out.” Finally, I felt like something was going our way. It might lead to a big nothing, but it was better than what we currently had, which was a big fat nothing.

“Tomorrow night, you, me, and Blondie are heading out for the evening. There’s a local band playing, and I have a feeling those guys are going to show.”

“Wow, you actually want Megan to come? That’s definitely something new.”

She shrugged her shoulders and winked. “What can I say? Sometimes I try to be the bigger person.”
